DESCRIPTION:Join us for this honest and insightful presentation into the realities of enduring the 60s Scoop\, the failures of Canadian welfare policies regarding Indigenous children\, and the incredible work being done to support survivors and families of the 60s Scoop on their journey to healing. \nAgenda \n\n9 – 10 am: Elder Barry and local Indigenous drummers will lead the opening drumming on Mishomis Ashage Dwegan (Blue Heron)\, the Campus’s Grandfather Drum.\n10 – 11 am: Keynote by Colleen Hele Cardinal\n\nAbout the Presenter: Colleen Hele Cardinal\nColleen Hele Cardinal is nehiyaw iskwew (Plains Cree) from Saddle Lake Cree Nation\, AB\, but was adopted and raised in Sault Ste Marie ON. She is a community organizer\, social justice advocate\, student\, author and kokum. Her work includes organizing six national 60s Scoop gatherings in Ontario\, raising the issue of the 60s Scoop at an international level to the displacement and loss of identity survivors have experienced. \nColleen also speaks publicly and candidly about MMIW2SG and the impacts of the 60s Scoop\, drawing critical connections between colonial child welfare removal policies and her lived experiences and those of women in her family. Colleen continues to volunteer with several initiatives\, including Families of Sisters in Spirit\, Blackbird Medicines and the Nobel Women’s Initiative Sister to Sister Mentorship program to address gender-based violence\, while giving context on the making of Canada\, treaty relationships and the dehumanization of Indigenous people through policy and media. \nShe is the author of the Ohpikiihaakan-ohpihmeh (Raised somewhere else): A 60s Scoop Adoptee’s Story of Coming Home as well as spearheading the GIS mapping initiative Mapping the 60s Scoop Diaspora\, and being awarded the Ontario Premier’s Award for Outstanding Community Service. Currently\, Colleen is a Trauma Informed Resolution Health Support worker and Lead Facilitator for the Sixties Scoop Network / Edbendaagzijiig (e dben daag zi jig). \nIn this presentation: \n\nContextualization of Indigenous child removals within Canada and insight into the current circumstances of the         60s Scoop.\nThe differences between Residential schools\, day schools\, the 60s Scoop\, and current child welfare policies\nThe newly developed GIS mapping tool to identify and connect 60s Scoop survivors\nInsight into the needs of 60s Scoop survivors and intergenerational trauma survivors\nThe Sixties Scoop Network – based in Ottawa.\n\nThis presentation will take place at the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, September 15\, 1 – 3:30 pm at Integrated Health Centre for an interactive session to experience the Kairos Blanket Exercise\, a teaching tool that shares the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. If you are interested in the session\, we do ask that you commit to the entire two and a half-hour window. \nWe encourage all newcomers to Lanark and Renfrew Counties to participate in this free event. There are limited spaces available\, so please only register if you know you can attend. \nNo experience necessary. All materials provided. \nIntegrate Health Centre is located at 570 Nelson Street\, Pembroke\, Ontario\, K8A 7W7. \nThis activity is part of #WelcomingWeek\, an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people\, places and values that help everyone feel welcome and give them a sense of belonging in their local community\, no matter where they come from\, and is in partnership with Integrate Health Centre and the Circle of Turtle Lodge. \nThis session speaks to the following Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action: \n\n14. Laura resides in Eganville with her family and is an engaged and active community member. SUMMARY:Creating Your Own Land Acknowledgement Statement
DESCRIPTION:Every Canadian has the privilege of living on land that once was the Traditional Territory of the Indigenous People who lived there before contact. Who are they? How did the land on which you live come to you? When and why did your ancestors come to Canada? What is the history of your people? What relationship\, if any did your family have with the Indigenous People of your land? The answers to all of these questions will help you to realize how you got to where you are now\, and will enable you to create your own authentic Land Acknowledgement Statement. \nPresenter Profile: Elder Aimee Bailey is a citizen of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and lives in their unceded Traditional Territory. She has an honours degree in the Humanities from York University and a post-graduate certificate as an Indigenous Traditional Practitioner from First Nations Technical Institute. Her decades of experience in restoring her Traditional Culture have had her establish The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre at Pikwakanagan and The Circle of Turtle Lodge at Golden Lake. \nThis lunch n’ learn is hosted in partnership with Lanark County Children and Youth Services Collaboration and Every Kid In Our Communities of Leeds and Grenville. \nThis event is open to all.
