SUMMARY:Kairos Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an experiential teaching tool based on participatory popular education methodology that explores the historical and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the land we now know as Canada. Created in 1997 by the Aboriginal Rights Coalition (ARC)\, a precursor to KAIROS\, the Blanket Exercise was initially meant to introduce Canadians to the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP). The Coalition brought Elders\, Indigenous educators\, and allies who wanted to ensure that RCAP and its recommendations were not shelved and forgotten. The Blanket Exercise is built on the foundation of these long-standing\, collaborative initiatives and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to raise awareness of continuing injustices and impacts of colonization and to promote further learning. For over two decades\, ARC and now KAIROS have guided its ongoing development with the leadership of Elders and Indigenous facilitators across this land. \nAll are welcome. We ask that you please register so that we know how many participants to prepare for using the Eventbrite link below. \nThis event will be hosted in partnership with the Mashkiwizii Manido Foundation and Petawawa Public Library. The exercise will take place outdoors at the Petawawa Civic Centre outdoor field #5. Participants are welcome to park in the library parking lot by the Civic Centre and walk to the field or they can park in the parking lots adjacent to the Dog Park – aka Scentral Park. In case of rain\, the exercise will take place in the Rotary Room of the Petawawa Civic Centre. \n \n

We will be layering the quilt onto a beautifully embossed background\, and then embellishing the card with a flower. To complete our card\, we will stamp a sentiment with your choice of quilty quotes. \nQuilting has a long and impressive history in Canada\, dating back to the 1600s when Europeans brought the practice with them when they settled in this country. Quilting in Canada has evolved over the years and became a social activity in which people would gather to sew quilts and share their stories. DESCRIPTION:As National Indigenous History Month commences for June\, Pembroke Waterfront Campus\, in partnership with Algonquin College Applied Research and The Circle of Turtle Lodge\, located on the traditional unceded\, unsurrendered territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin People is excited to invite you to join us as we celebrate the opening of our Medicine Wheel Garden and share in a dedication of this sacred space. \nThe ceremony will begin at 11:00 am with a smudge and opening prayer and then move into speeches to acknowledge this wonderful space and the gift we are receiving. This space will have impact for our students\, staff\, faculty\, and the extended Pembroke and Ottawa Valley community for years to come. \nAfter the formal ceremony we hope that you will join us as we celebrate this special day in our Commons. Visit you local library to see if they have these reads available to borrow. Stay tuned during the first week of June where fellow community members will champion each book on our YouTube channel. After this\, the voting will commence once again to determine our winner! \nFollowing the premieres of videos\, a weekly bracket vote will commence. The idea behind these Welcome Rocks is that community members can decorate them using the Welcome Rock painting kits that you can pick up at the Library and place them in locations for others to find as a welcome to our community gesture.\nParticipants are encouraged to take a picture of their rocks in their garden or community and post them on social media with #WelcomeRocks and #CultureConnect for a chance to win a prize at the end of June.\nBiblio Bingo: Culture Connect Biblio Bingo is a fun way for library patrons to engage in guided learning as you choose your bingo journey from the prompts on the Culture Connect Biblio Bingo card. Some examples include\, watch a movie in a different language\, read an 2SLGBTQ+ story\, read something by an author who identifies as disabled\, etc.\nSpill the Tea: Tea is a drink enjoyed around the globe. Stop by the Library to pick up your take-and-make kit with different types of teas to try and enjoy at home. Learn about the different teas and cultural traditions involving tea using the resources in your kit.\nThere is an opportunity for participants to share their experience online using both hashtags #CultureConnect and #SpillTheTea.\nOrigami or Paper Folding Activity: The art of origami is a beautiful and well-known tradition. Learning origami can be a great way for kids of all ages to engage with a different culture. Stop by the Library to pick up a kit with beautifully coloured paper\, instructions (or QR codes leading to video instructions) and a resource about the history and tradition of origami.\n\nNo registration is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Update! Due to unforeseen circumstances\, our friends at Starbucks Carleton Place will have to postpone this event until Monday\, July 11. \nOne-on-one conversations over coffee with our neighbours. Our neighbours are made up of various community members with unique experiences\, backgrounds and stories to tell. Each neighbour will have two 30-minute reservable time slots available during the\nevent. Everyone has a story to tell\, why not meet someone new for half an hour and learn something about them. \nCoffee and treats will be provided. This is a free event! \nReservations are required and can be made by calling Starbucks Carleton Place at 613-253-1760 or emailing sarahloftus@rogers.com.
