DESCRIPTION:Join us for this honest and insightful presentation into the realities of enduring the 60s Scoop\, the failures of Canadian welfare policies regarding Indigenous children\, and the incredible work being done to support survivors and families of the 60s Scoop on their journey to healing. \nAgenda \n\n9 – 10 am: Elder Barry and local Indigenous drummers will lead the opening drumming on Mishomis Ashage Dwegan (Blue Heron)\, the Campus’s Grandfather Drum.\n10 – 11 am: Keynote by Colleen Hele Cardinal\n\nAbout the Presenter: Colleen Hele Cardinal\nColleen Hele Cardinal is nehiyaw iskwew (Plains Cree) from Saddle Lake Cree Nation\, AB\, but was adopted and raised in Sault Ste Marie ON. She is a community organizer\, social justice advocate\, student\, author and kokum. Her work includes organizing six national 60s Scoop gatherings in Ontario\, raising the issue of the 60s Scoop at an international level to the displacement and loss of identity survivors have experienced. \nColleen also speaks publicly and candidly about MMIW2SG and the impacts of the 60s Scoop\, drawing critical connections between colonial child welfare removal policies and her lived experiences and those of women in her family. Colleen continues to volunteer with several initiatives\, including Families of Sisters in Spirit\, Blackbird Medicines and the Nobel Women’s Initiative Sister to Sister Mentorship program to address gender-based violence\, while giving context on the making of Canada\, treaty relationships and the dehumanization of Indigenous people through policy and media. \nShe is the author of the Ohpikiihaakan-ohpihmeh (Raised somewhere else): A 60s Scoop Adoptee’s Story of Coming Home as well as spearheading the GIS mapping initiative Mapping the 60s Scoop Diaspora\, and being awarded the Ontario Premier’s Award for Outstanding Community Service. Currently\, Colleen is a Trauma Informed Resolution Health Support worker and Lead Facilitator for the Sixties Scoop Network / Edbendaagzijiig (e dben daag zi jig). \nIn this presentation: \n\nContextualization of Indigenous child removals within Canada and insight into the current circumstances of the         60s Scoop.\nThe differences between Residential schools\, day schools\, the 60s Scoop\, and current child welfare policies\nThe newly developed GIS mapping tool to identify and connect 60s Scoop survivors\nInsight into the needs of 60s Scoop survivors and intergenerational trauma survivors\nThe Sixties Scoop Network – based in Ottawa.\n\nThis presentation will take place at the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus. Morris\nRU – Kim Thuy\nOhpikiihaakan-Ohpihmen (Raised Somewhere Else): A 60s Scoop Adoptees Story of Coming Home – Colleen Hele Cardinal\n\nWe can’t wait to start reading and engaging with culture! Visit you local library to see if they have these reads available to borrow. Stay tuned during June\, when fellow community members will champion each book on our YouTube channel. After this\, the voting will commence once again to determine our winner! \nFollowing the premieres of videos\, a weekly bracket vote will commence. Participants will be asked to eliminate a book week by week until we declare a winner during the last week of June. The competition is a great way to get our communities reading and talking about their love of books! \n  \nHow can I engage? \n\nHelp promote and share the competition on your social media channels\nOffer the selected books for borrowing in a special library spot\nInter-library loan the reads to have multiple copies available\nConsider limiting borrowing time to one or two weeks\nKeep a bracket on display tracking the competition results\nParticipate and read the books

The idea behind these Welcome Rocks is that community members can decorate them using the Welcome Rock painting kits that you can pick up at the Library and place them in locations for others to find as a welcome to our community gesture.\nParticipants are encouraged to take a picture of their rocks in their garden or community and post them on social media with #WelcomeRocks and #CultureConnect for a chance to win a prize at the end of June.\nSpill the Tea: Tea is a drink enjoyed around the globe. DESCRIPTION:The most popular Arab folk dance is the Dabke. Dabke is the Arab form of line dancing. Dabke is danced at weddings and other gatherings and on the streets. Dabke started as a way of repairing roofs and soon turned into an entertainment form\, spreading to other countries in the Middle East. As better roofing techniques evolved\, Dabke also evolved into a more entertaining dance form. \nDabke is a popular dance in Syria\, Lebanon\, Jordan\, and Palestine\, danced by men and women of all ages. \nParticipants are asked to wear comfortable clothing\, flat shoes (no heels) and bring water to drink! \nClick Here to Register \n
