Working Group Purpose

Our aim is to foster stronger relationships, forge meaningful connections, and cultivate trust among newcomers, refugees, international students, and immigrants within the Lanark and Renfrew County areas.

 

We strive to achieve this by creating an inclusive space for active listening, understanding diverse needs, and providing tailored services based on the collective experience, research, and knowledge of our collaborative working group. We are committed to driving our goals forward through collaborative efforts, emphasizing a proactive approach to addressing challenges and leveraging past experiences to inform our actions.

Group Goals

  • Build better relationships, connections and bonds with newcomers in the Lanark and Renfrew County areas.
  • Creating a space for active listening, recognizing needs and connection.
  • Supporting and empowering newcomers by enhancing access to employment and career development opportunities in our communities.

Objectives

  • Offer recommendations for programs, initiatives, and activities aimed at fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for newcomers, refugees, international students, and immigrants while respecting diverse cultures and promoting inclusivity.
  • Collaborate to promote the unity and inclusion of the immigrant community within the Lanark and Renfrew County areas, emphasizing respect for diverse cultures and fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Contribute to local research efforts to identify how services can effectively assist newcomers and immigrants in settling within Lanark and Renfrew Counties, with a focus on embracing cultural diversity and honoring individual experiences.

Membership Structure

10 – 15 members from various communities across Lanark & Renfrew Counties who identify as:

  • A newcomer to Canada
  • A refugee or protected person
  • An international student
  • An employed, unemployed, or underemployed temporary resident with a valid:
    • Work Permit or
    • Temporary Foreign Work Permit
  • Hold a Permanent Resident card
  • Immigrated to Canada and live in Lanark County or Renfrew County

Membership Commitment

  • This is a voluntary position. In recognition of a member’s commitment, an honorarium will be given to each member for meetings attended.
  • Attend and actively participate in 12 meetings per year (once per month)
  • Monthly meetings take place through a combination of online and in-person meeting formats determined by members.
  • Meetings will be for 1-hour unless previously agreed upon to be longer.
  • Group members are asked to maintain active participation. If a member misses three (3) consecutive meeting without prior notice or contact, they will be contacted by the LIP team to discuss ongoing involvement with the group.
  • Inform LIP in advance if you will not be able to attend the meeting
  • Members are appointed for a period of at least one year (with the possibility of extension).
  • Decisions will be made by consensus of 50 + 1 through formal vote.
  • Develop and maintain a climate where mutual respect, support, trust, courtesy, teamwork, creativity, and a sense of humor are valued.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Respect the individual worth and dignity of other members and LIP staff and always work together to achieve a common vision for Lanark and Renfrew County.

Conflict of Interest

  • Committee members should have good judgment and values. If there’s a disagreement or situation that might seem like one, members need to be honest and open to make a fair decision.
  • If a member might gain something personally from a decision, they must say so to avoid a conflict of interest.
  • If a conflict of interest happens, that person should leave the meeting and not take part in deciding on the matter, even if it’s online.

Meet Our Members

Mary

Mary has been in Arnprior for almost two years after moving to Canada 10 years ago from Nigeria. She finds the community spirit in Arnprior wonderful

Beatriz

Beatriz is a recent Social Worker graduate from Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus. She is originally from Peru and loves how pleasant Pembroke is and how supportive the community can be. She joined the Welcoming Networking group because she loves to help people.

Diane

Diane moved to Ottawa recently with her family. She joined this Welcoming Network to continue her journey of calling Canada home and connecting with others in her community.

Uche

Uche recently became a citizen of Canada and calls Deep River home. Living here for a decade, she loves her community and enjoys the various activities Deep River has to offer. She joined the Welcoming Network group to help others and make meaningful changes in her community.

Harry

Having moved from India over 10 years ago, Harry lives in the Carleton Place where he finds the community very welcoming and the area a nice place to live.

Maryse

Maryse moved to beautiful Petawawa, Ontario in 2017. She loves all the scenic outdoor spaces in the Valley and is an active member of her community, participating in our Welcoming Network group as well as the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Committee of Petawawa. She is passionate about making her community a safe and welcoming place for all.

Wesley

Wesley relocated from Singapore to Canada in the late 90s and finally settling in Eganville, ON in 2016. There, he co-founded Fairside Farm, dedicated to ecological and humane principles. Wesley's passion for growing food, raising sheep and other animals stems from his commitment to providing affordable, nutritious food for the community. Actively involved in the boards of Ontario Sheep Farmers and Farmers for Climate Solutions, he advocates for Ontario's sheep industry and sustainable agriculture. Additionally, he’s excited to be part of LIP’s Renfrew and Lanark Counties Welcoming Network, that help new immigrants like himself find support and opportunities in our community.

Fairside Farm

Noelia

Noelia arrived in Arnprior, ON several months ago from Argentina and has joined the Welcoming Network to create connections, learn about Canadian culture and continue her journey settling into Arnprior.

Rawd

A Palestinian/Jordanian, Rawd moved to Canada 3 years ago and now lives in beautiful Almonte. Her neighbours and community helped her settle into the area and navigate winter in the Ottawa Valley. Having previously worked with LIP and participated in various events, being a part of the Welcoming Network only made sense!

Tonka

Two years ago, Tonka and her family moved to Pembroke from Chile. She enjoys the quiet lifestyle and the kindness of those in the community. She has joined the Welcoming Network to connect with other newcomers in the Ottawa Valley and share her experiences to help others

Stella

Stella came to Canada from Mexico almost 17 years ago and has successfully navigated the challenges of integration. For the past decade she has been a volunteer mentor to recent immigrants and wants to continue helping newcomers. Her family moved to Carleton Place in 2023 where they hope to live for a long time

Samruddhee

Sam moved to Pembroke recently from Ottawa city and has been in Canada for 4 years after moving from Mumbai, India. She joined the Welcoming Network to make local connections.

Alaa

Alaa and her family have been in Deep River for 8 years after moving from Syria. Her community is very warm and welcoming and she joined the Welcoming Network group to help newcomers in Renfrew County
