The 5th Annual Spirit of the Drum Traditional and Educational Powwow will take place on June 10th & 11th at Duck and Turtle Islands in Smiths Falls.
This year’s event will be represented by 10 different First Nations groups including Dancers and Drum groups from New Brunswick,
Kitigan Zibi Quebec,
Akwesasne,
Pikwakanagan,
Tyendanaga. Indigenous Cultural Advisors and Knowledge Keepers from Akwesasne, Ottawa, Pikwakanagan, Tyendanaga.
On site will be Indigenous-owned and led food and craft vendors, educational displays of student projects and four free workshops for the public, taught by Cultural Advisors from the Inuit, Algonquin and Mohawk communities on history, culture, ceremony and traditions.
There will be two workshops each morning starting at 10:00 am and ending at 11:45 am.
June 10th will be focused on traditional aspects of Powwow Dance, Drumming and the lighting of the Sacred Fire. The workshop on this day will focus on Wampum beadwork, Haudenasaunee/Mohawk History and Inuit History and Culture Teachings.
June 11th will have competitive Indigenous Dances. The workshop on this day will focus on Anishinaabe/Algonquin Drum and Dance Teachings, Medicine Wheel and 4 Sacred Medicine Teachings.
The entire event, including workshops are free.
