When you go see a lawyer, you should ask for an estimate of what the work will cost. Find a lawyer near you.

Human Rights: Human rights are an important part of Canadian law. In Ontario, human rights are protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code. Discrimination because of religion is against the law in Canada. Contact the Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC) for free legal support about your situation.

Police: In Canada, the police are separate from government and from the military. In Ontario, police services must include crime prevention, law enforcement, assistance to victims of crime, public order maintenance, and emergency response. If you have an emergency, call 9-1-1. If it is not an emergency, use the police non-emergency phone number. If you are charged with a crime in Canada, and you are not a Canadian citizen, what the court decides may affect your immigration status. This fact sheet was produced by Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO).

If You Are Arrested or Detained: The police cannot arrest or detain you without following very strict rules. This booklet sets out the rights of a person who is stopped, questioned, searched, arrested, or detained by the police. It also explains when the police can enter or search someone’s home.
