Government-sponsored refugees are greeted at the hotel by the Immigrant Reception and Information Services (IRIS). They will refer the refugee to a reception centre, which will have a room prepared for them. From there, they will help the refugee find housing. A single refugee receives about $ 768 per month, though that may be higher depending on circumstances. Medical exams and transportation are initially covered through a loan and must be repaid to the government.
Privately sponsored refugees (PSR) do not receive government funds or specialized help with housing. It is the responsibility of their sponsor to find and pay for accommodations during the refugee’s first year or until they can provide for themselves, whichever comes first.
But finding safe, clean housing can be difficult.
Regardless of their country of origin, everybody is finding it increasingly difficult to find a place to live, particularly in Ontario, where the average home price is now $1,086,493. Despite its rural nature, due to the lack of available housing, the rental market in Renfrew County and Lanark County mimics that of Ottawa, which sees most apartments priced at a minimum of $1,500 for a one-bedroom.
While Canadian-born residents may have a network of friends, family and coworkers to help them find a place to live, PSRs usually only have their sponsors.
So, what can you do to help a refugee find a home?
Open up your home
With the recent influx of refugees and asylum seekers, many Canadians have been touched by their plight and offered rooms within their homes. Leveraging social media, personal networks, news articles and word of mouth, sponsors may be able to find generous hosts. With the help of the sponsors, these hosts can help guide, mentor, and direct the refugee towards the necessary resources without worrying about high housing expenses.
Renting out a hotel or hostel
If you and your group of sponsors cannot open up your homes or find somebody who can, you can rent out a hostel or hotel room. This will give the refugee a safe place to sleep while searching for a more permanent solution. It is an ideal stopgap, though it can become very costly quickly.
Renting an apartment or house
Renting a house or apartment will allow the refugee to settle comfortably in Canada. It creates a stable home where they can feel safe and comfortable, allowing them to rebuild their lives.
However, it can be difficult to find an affordable home. But the Rental Market Report does provide a review of rent and vacancy trends.
Once stable accommodation is found, the refugee can work toward rebuilding their lives.
