The ups and downs of being an immigrant in a rural community

Beatriz Tejada

After successfully pursuing a career as a lawyer in Peru, Beatriz decided she wanted to start over in Canada and continue studying. She found herself in scenic Pembroke as a Social Services Worker student at Algonquin College. Beatriz shares her experiences navigating a new culture, life in a rural town and the ups and downs she has faced as an international student.

“Adjusting to life in a rural community like Pembroke has presented its challenges. The community, rapidly diversifying due to the college, is not entirely accustomed to the cultural shift.”
