Hire Immigrants Ottawa: Unlocking potential for employers and immigrants
In Ottawa, the diverse talents brought by skilled immigrants are a valuable asset. The Hire Immigrants Ottawa (HIO) initiative, launched in 2006, bridges the gap between employers and skilled immigrants, enriching the local workforce and community.
HIO collaborates with employers, immigrant agencies, and stakeholders to address barriers in attracting, hiring, and integrating skilled immigrants. The mandate is to enhance employer capacity in Ottawa to attract, hire, and integrate skilled immigrants into suitable roles.
HIO’s approach empowers both employers and immigrants through:
Convening and Collaborating:
HIO establishes an Employer Council of Champions, comprising senior executives from public and private sector employers, promoting immigrant integration. Sector-specific Working Groups address industry-specific challenges.
Collaboration with immigrant serving organizations connects job-ready skilled immigrants with employers.
Building Employer Capacity:
HIO offers tools, resources, programs, and events, including Cross Cultural Competency Workshops, Coaching and Networking Events, and access to Labour Market Information.
The Annual Employer Summit and Employer Excellence Awards celebrate diversity champions.
Raising Public Awareness:
HIO’s ongoing campaign highlights the economic benefits of immigrant participation in the labor force.
HIO’s impact is evident in engaging over 600 employers, creating awareness, and developing valuable resources. It led to systemic HR policy changes, promoting inclusivity in over 200 organizations. HIO enabled 1,500 immigrants to secure skills-appropriate positions.
The initiative exemplifies how collaboration unlocks the potential of skilled immigrants for employers and immigrants alike. It fosters an inclusive labor force, driving economic growth, innovation, and community cohesion.
