Consider second-hand furnishings - with some patience and a little effort, you can find the items that you need for free.

Maintaining a home and taking care of a family can be pricey. Between furnishing the interior, keeping up with regular maintenance, and keeping up with growing kids, costs can add up quickly. With some patience and a little effort, you can find the items you need for free. To help you find items that people in your neighbourhood are giving away without asking for anything in return, there are many websites and apps that you can explore.

Facebook Neighbourhood:

When you get access to the feature, you’ll be able to join a Neighbourhood group for your own town, as well as groups for surrounding towns. You can create a special Neighbourhoods profile that’s different from your main one if you want neighbours to know only certain things about you, but you’ll have to be 18 and above to be able to join. If you’re looking to find a certain free item, you can find those items by simply asking in your Neighbourhood or creating your own free items group that will be accessible within the ‘Neighbourhood’ tab.

Facebook Marketplace:

Some people use Facebook Marketplace to give away items they don’t need for free. To find these items, filter your search to “Only show free listings.” There, you’ll see items that are being given away for free. Be sure to read the listing first and see if it’s really free.

Facebook Community Groups:

Almost every community big and small has some sort of community Facebook group. Many are dedicated to buy and sell. In addition to buy and sell groups where you can hunt for bargains, there are also buy nothing groups where people give things away for free, and virtual yard sale groups. Some examples include:

Perth Barter Board

Petawawa/Pembroke 24/7 Free Stuff

Buy Nothing Petawawa

Killaloe Buy and Sell

Kijiji:

The go-to online marketplace in Canada when you are looking to locate free items or buy things for cheap or sell your old belongings.

Nextdoor:

To help you find items that people in your neighbourhood are giving away without asking for anything in return, Nextdoor has opened a new section called Free Finds. You’ll be able to look through the latest listings, browse the items that are closest to you and uncover hidden gems. You can also make requests for things you’re seeking. Nextdoor will let anyone browse the Free Finds section without first creating an account. If you see an item that grabs your attention, you can sign up to contact the neighbour who’s giving it away.

Canoo app:

The Canoo app offers a one-year free membership to over 1400 cultural and outdoor experiences across Canada for eligible newcomers, including permanent residents within the first five years and Canadian citizens within the first 12 months. Attractions in Ontario include the Toronto Zoo, Ontario Science Centre, Royal Ontario Museum, and Parks Canada, and members can also access discounts to various events, travel, and recreational activities. The app is available on App Store or Google Play, and immigration documents are securely stored through a third-party server managed by the Government of Canada.
