Dining Tips

• If you’re dining at a sit-down restaurant, generally you will order and dine first, then receive a bill at the end of the meal. It is considered customary to tip (leave a gratuity) at least 18% of your bill either by leaving cash or adding it to your debit/credit purchase. This lets the server and restaurant know how you thought the service was.

• Take-out restaurants may also present the opportunity to tip (leave a gratuity) at the point of purchase (sometimes in the form of a tip-jar). This is also considered good practice if you received great service, however it is less expected than when dining at a sit-down restaurant. In Canada, gratuities are considered a part of food-service workers’ wages as they make a reduced minimum wage than other industries.

• Most restaurants do not offer complimentary beverages unless it is part of a take-out combo

• Restaurants in Ontario are required to disclose the calorie count of all food items. This is why you may see them listed on the menu.

• If you’re planning to visit a popular sit-down restaurant, especially with a larger group, it may be a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time.

• Closing your menu will generally let your server know that you are ready to place your order. Servers will visit your table often to check on you, so there is no need to wave them over.

• Make sure to disclose your allergies before ordering so that the server can recommend dishes for you or make accommodations with the kitchen staff.
