Have you ever wanted to make a difference but not sure how? Sometimes we can get so overwhelmed by the world’s problems, it’s hard to find a way to feel like anything we do will make a difference. One thing everyone needs to remember is that we all have something to offer. We all bring different skills, stories, ideas, quirks, knowledge, and care to the table. When it comes to joining a mentorship program for newcomers, these attributes can make a big difference in their lives.
In order to comprehend a newcomer’s experience arriving in a brand-new country, you have to put yourself in their shoes. How do I leave the airport? Where will I stay? What is the currency? Will my phone work? All of these worries are part of the first day! Once a newcomer is settled, there are so many other things they may need a guiding hand with like language, resume writing, school applications, applying for licences, visa paperwork, opening bank accounts, personal interests, and so much more.
Having a friendly face can go a long way in a new situation like this, and in turn, mentors can learn so much from the person they are mentoring. Aside from the social benefits, personal fulfillment, and potential friendship, mentoring provides an opportunity to give someone a great start in their new home. So, why not try it out?
